Immersive Performance Meets Dining: The Great Christmas Feast 2024
Christmas Eve 1843, London. You are invited to a mysterious mansion. The owner of this house is the great author Charles Dickens. He tells you enchanting Christmas stories and leads you into a world of fantasy.
Based on Charles Dickens' masterpiece 'A Christmas Carol,' 'The Great Christmas Feast' has been reborn as an immersive experience where actors' performances meet live music. This show, which has been performed in London since 2018, recreates the Victorian era in a 5,000 square foot (465 square meters, approximately 140 pyeong) space.
What makes this performance special is that it's combined with dining. They serve various dishes and drinks reminiscent of the Victorian era, which makes me want to visit in person next Christmas.
Combining Sight, Sound, and Touch: Viola's Room
If you've subscribed to <Realworld EXP.>, you're familiar with the immersive theater 'Sleep No More.' Punchdrunk, the creators of 'Sleep No More,' has given their new work 'Viola's Room' a Christmas makeover.
'Viola's Room,' written by Booker Prize finalist Daisy Johnson and narrated by acclaimed actress Helena Bonham Carter, is said to be a fresh take on classic Gothic mystery novels. Participants must wear headphones and walk barefoot through dark, maze-like spaces. Through this process, they can experience a new combination of sight, sound, and touch.
'Viola's Room' differs from 'Sleep No More,' where you could follow any actor you wanted without a set route to enjoy the story. Instead, it features linear movement through designated spaces. This is likely because the emotional flow according to story progression needs to be considered.
It's unfortunate that 'Viola's Room' will close after this Christmas season, but just as 'Sleep No More' is coming to Seoul in 2025, I hope we can also experience 'Viola's Room' in Korea.
A Murder Case at Christmas?: Jury Games
'Jury Games' is an immersive experience program conducted in London, UK. Participants become jurors and must investigate fictional cases, which appears to be an interesting program requiring teamwork and deductive skills. During the COVID-19 pandemic, it was conducted online, but now they have their own space and operate both offline events as well.
Recently, they've been running a Christmas-themed event called 'Death At The Office Christmas Party,' which, despite its light-hearted appearance, seems quite serious as it involves a murder case after all.
The CEO of a promising app service dies at a Christmas party. Participants must check CCTV footage and investigate two hungover witnesses. Since actors perform directly, their responses can vary depending on what questions participants ask. To uncover the truth from witnesses hiding secrets, you'll need to ask the right questions.
