Diversity and inclusion education has become an essential educational topic for many institutions, companies, and organizations since 2022.
Could this be why?
Among the experiential education programs that Realworld offers,
one of the most requested topics recently
is D&I education - diversity and inclusion education.
Mainly conducted during ESG weeks at public institutions, government corporations, foundations, and associations,
but also consistently implemented at various global corporations such as AmorePacific and YG Entertainment!
That's right - diversity and inclusion education!
So today, we'd like to introduce the cultural diversity experiential workshop <Find the Boss> education program conducted at Gwangju Cultural Foundation during ESG Culture Week.
Diversity refers to
demographic attributes such as gender, age, and race,
background attributes such as education, work experience, and expertise,
and invisible personal attributes such as individual values, attitudes, and beliefs -
characteristics that make each individual special, unique, and distinctive.
Inclusion is
recognizing and respecting differences from others,
and furthermore, utilizing the value of differences. As its importance has emerged globally in recent years,
many companies are conducting diversity and inclusion education as essential training for their employees.
But here's the thing,
what if the diversity and inclusion education conducted regularly every year
were just regular lectures?
Since diversity and inclusion education aims to recognize unconscious biases that have unknowingly taken root
and develop fair perspectives,
lecture-based education has clear limitations.
For trainees, it often becomes
a ceremonial and boring regular education conducted once a year.
That's why diversity and inclusion education, D&I education, more than any other training,
must be conducted as experiential learning where trainees become the protagonists of the educational content themselves,
directly recognizing their own biases and striving to develop fair perspectives.
Therefore, all of Realworld's education programs consist of experiential programs conducted using app systems and on-site installation kits,
where trainees directly experience and collaborate through hands-on learning.
It's designed so that trainees naturally realize their own biases
while obtaining clues from characters on posters installed throughout the classroom
and performing missions.
Trainees don't just sit quietly and passively listen to education as shown in the photo below,
but have a unique experience of moving around the classroom with colleagues and becoming protagonists in the educational content themselves.
Once all clues have been gathered from the characters on posters installed in the classroom,
now someone's composite sketch must be completed.
Through activities of solving problems according to each role and drawing composite sketches,
they naturally become aware of unconscious biases.
After the activities, we have
wrap-up time with global cases.
Listening to various advanced cases and campaigns,
case studies in diversity and inclusion education together, it becomes a time to realize the importance of diversity and inclusion
and how crucial it is for individuals to develop fair perspectives
in an era where bias has become even more extreme.
As a result of the education,
various composite sketch drawings created by trainees remain as shown below.
Just displaying and examining them together sufficiently conveys the purpose of the education.
Even though the same information was received, this itself shows that people are all truly different
and diverse.
Trainees don't sit in chairs quietly watching the instructor's PowerPoint on screen
and listening to the instructor's stories,
but instead move around the classroom finding clues themselves,
solving problems, and personally experiencing diversity and inclusion education
not as rote learning but as a process of self-realization.
Realworld's Interactive Workshop
After activities and wrap-up,
there's time to write call-to-actions about what to practice
after returning to work following the education,
along with discussions that may follow depending on the education time and curriculum.
The Korea Arts Council
had discussion time with the following topics.
AmorePacific
also had discussion time with similar but different topics.
After this experiential education time of physically experiencing diversity and inclusion,
trainees leave genuine reviews about their resolutions
for future D&I internalization!
