An easy, fun outdoor escape game <Find the Super Capsule> taking place at Daecheongho Obaengni-gil

We conducted interviews with the planner and designer to see how it was planned and created!

<Find the Super Capsule> Planner
"I want to promote the city of Daejeon through games."

Q. I'm curious about the planning intention behind Find the Super Capsule.
A. Since Daejeon is a science city, we made 'Super Capsule,' a science-related material, the main theme. I thought 'Super Capsule' would be intriguing and familiar to people regardless of age. We also incorporated nature as a theme so that people of all ages could enjoy playing. That's why many of the puzzle answers are natural elements like water, forests, and lakes.

Q. I see! Is there a reason you chose Kkumdoli as the main character?
A. It's already a well-known character, and since I'm from Daejeon, I knew Expo Kkumdoli. It's a character from my memories, and I thought many people might have similar memories like me. So I thought it could give a more friendly feeling when playing. Also, Kkumdoli is a science-related character, so it aligned with the game's planning intention.

Q. Kkumdoli is really cute, so it seems to help with immersion during play. Were there any particular aspects you paid attention to while planning this outdoor escape room?
A. When I went to Daejeon for site research, I took lots of photos and tried to capture various aspects as thoroughly as possible. Also, after planning the story, when I revisited the site, I printed out the story plan and looked at the site from the player's perspective. I checked for any potential inconveniences during play.

Q. You worked hard. Were there any difficulties while planning <Find the Super Capsule>?
A. When creating the English version <Super Capsule>, the on-site signs were only in Korean, so I couldn't use them. That's why I had to delete some quests from the English version, which was disappointing.

Q. Those difficulties must have been challenging. Then, were there any rewarding aspects while planning <Find the Super Capsule>?
A. First, I'm grateful that the Kkumdoli character was designed so cutely, and I'm proud that Kkumdoli expressed the story well. Usually, I often have to scrap the story and redo the puzzles. But <Find the Super Capsule> could be planned quickly without major difficulties, which was rewarding.

Q. <Find the Super Capsule> is set to an easy difficulty level. Was there an intention behind this?
A. Since this was the first time introducing the 'Realworld' project to Daejeon, I kept in mind that people experiencing 'Realworld' for the first time would be playing. I adjusted the difficulty so that even those playing this type of game for the first time could solve it easily and enjoyably.

Q. It's definitely not boring while being easy, making it fun to play. What kind of place is 'Daecheongho Obaengni-gil' where the gameplay takes place?
A. Even though I lived in Daejeon for a long time, I had never been to Daecheongho Obaengni-gil. I was quite surprised to discover such a beautiful and exotic place existed. Especially, the natural scenery of Daecheongho is breathtakingly beautiful. Daecheongho is the second largest lake in Korea. Isn't that amazing?

Q. That's right. It seems you tried to incorporate a lot of stories about 'natural beauty' in <Find the Super Capsule>.
A. Yes. I tried to capture the nature of Daecheongho and especially express Daejeon as an advanced science city. I wanted to promote Daejeon, a city with scientific symbolism, while enjoying the beautiful nature of Daecheongho. People might think of countryside when they hear Daejeon (大田 - big field), but it's a place with many power plants and research institutes. (laughs)

Q. I see! If there are any pro tips for playing <Find the Super Capsule>, what would they be?
A. Eat a hearty meal before going! And go when the weather is nice! Also, I think it would be more fun if you play with full immersion, thinking of Kkumdoli as a real friend.

Q. If there was a super capsule that gave you superpowers, what kind of superpower would you want?
A. I'd want teleportation! Travel time is such a waste. If I could teleport, wouldn't I be able to sleep more? And since technology has advanced (seriously), I believe we'll be able to teleport in the near future! (laughs)

Q. Teleportation! I think having that superpower would be great too. Finally, please say a word to those who will play <Find the Super Capsule>.
A. First, I hope many people from Daejeon will play it. I hope they go with friends or family to enjoy nature and spend quality bonding time with loved ones. If you suggest playing <Find the Super Capsule>, you'll become really popular, right? (laughs)

<Find the Super Capsule> Designer Interview
"I'm in charge of being the bridge between planning and gameplay"

Q. I'm curious about your thoughts on working on <Find the Super Capsule>.
A. First, this is the first game I made after joining the company. I don't know what games I'll design in the future, but maybe because it's my first project, I feel more attached to it. Also, there are various poses of Kkumdoli - running Kkumdoli, playground-going Kkumdoli, gaming Kkumdoli - and each Kkumdoli feels like my own child.

Q. Kkumdoli is so cute! I'm curious about how you came to work on Kkumdoli.
A. For Kkumdoli, I received the original source material and drew over it as a reference. Since there were many reference sources available, it wasn't too difficult. Also, expecting many children to play, I drew Kkumdoli as lively and cute as possible in a style that today's kids would like.

Q. It's really so cute! Were there any aspects you paid special attention to while working on this outdoor escape room?
A. Since I hadn't visited the actual location while working, I tried my best to understand the play areas. I looked at many site research photos and maps taken by the planners, trying to understand from the player's perspective.

Q. You really put in a lot of effort. Do you have a design philosophy?
A. I think 'design' serves as a stepping stone. Since I work on visual materials that directly convey what someone wants to say to users, I try to think from the user's perspective. It's my philosophy to work from the user's standpoint, thinking about not just the design but even small details beyond design.

Q. That's great. Was this design philosophy reflected in <Find the Super Capsule> as well?
A. Yes. I used many speech bubbles so players could easily understand the story with Kkumdoli. Also, to help players find their way easily, I designed guidance with Kkumdoli pointing to bulletin boards and magnifying glasses. I also suggested to the planner that we should modify awkward sentences in the story to make it easier for players to understand.

Q. It seems you paid a lot of attention. I'm curious about what you do when work isn't going well.
A. I go to the office rooftop with team members to get some fresh air. Going to the rooftop, getting some air and taking a break seems to clear my head when I come back down.

Q. Are there any design aspects you'd especially like players to notice?
A. Kkumdoli has various expressions - laughing, getting angry, pondering... (laughs) I'd like them to notice those diverse expressions of Kkumdoli.

Q. Kkumdoli really seems cute. Do you have any characters you like in general?
A. I like Crayon Shin-chan. Shin-chan's face is cute, and I'm envious that innocent Shin-chan lives doing whatever he wants.

Q. Shin-chan is cute too. If there was a super capsule that gave superpowers, what kind of superpower would you want?
A. I worry a lot. I'd like a super capsule that erases worries and random thoughts. Just that alone would let me live life more comfortably, don't you think? (laughs)

Q. That's a nice superpower. You usually solve games very quickly, do you have any tips for solving puzzles well?
A. I really love playing games, and since I've played many Realworld games, I've gotten used to them and they feel easier. I think solving lots of puzzles would help!

Q. Are there any memorable episodes from working on <Find the Super Capsule>?
A. When we went to Daecheongho Obaengni-gil for beta testing, it rained heavily. We had to wear rain gear because of the heavy rain, and that's memorable. (laughs) Also, internal QA and on-site beta testing definitely felt different. So it felt quite unique.

Q. Finally, please say a word to the <Find the Super Capsule> players.
A. I learned about Daecheongho for the first time through this project, and it was really nice. Maybe I like nature more as I get older. Playing <Find the Super Capsule> with precious family and friends at Daecheongho with its beautiful natural scenery would make wonderful memories! Please definitely try playing it!
