Behind the Scenes of <Over the Rainbow>: Stories from the Producer

2020-02-10리얼월드

Hello everyone!

Today's post topic is something
that probably no one is curious about,
but I'm still hoping someone will read it...
Let me tell you the behind-the-scenes story of <Over the Rainbow>.

How this project came to be planned,
what inspired us, and so on^^

So, shall we begin?

The inspiration behind planning <Over the Rainbow>

A post about pets that I happened to see on my way home from work

It was when I was on the train home with my tired body,
zoning out while looking at my phone.
One post I happened to see really struck my heart :)

'I'm sick'...
I'm someone who doesn't know what tears are...

What would you want to hear from your pet?

To be honest,
with the desire to have someone welcome me home after work,
I thought of things like "How was your day?" or "Good job today."

Surprisingly,
many pet owners
want to hear just one phrase: "I'm sick"
so they can immediately rush to the vet when their pet is ill.
Since pets can't speak human language, they always pay close attention to detect their pain.

Seeing this, so many thoughts crossed my mind.
Welcoming an animal as family
isn't something you do with an ordinary heart.
There's something strong that transcends the human-animal relationship.
That's what I thought :)

From then on, I wanted to incorporate a story about dogs into a game.
Especially hoping it would help those suffering from 'pet loss syndrome.'
* Pet loss syndrome: The sense of loss and depressive symptoms experienced after the death of a beloved pet that was like family. (Reference: Naver Knowledge Encyclopedia)

Although I don't have a dog,
while researching information about companion dogs,
I read touching stories about the 'rainbow bridge' and poems filled with pain,
gradually building up the story.

The movie that inspired <Over the Rainbow>

The countless emotions felt when changing from black and white to color, <The Giver>

The story about 'color' can't be left out either,
as almost all missions are composed of 'colors.'

There's a movie that gave me the inspiration that 'color = emotion.'
It's a movie that personally impressed me, so I'd like to introduce it to you all.
That movie is...

<The Giver>.

There's a funny(?) episode about this movie.
I liked the last scene I saw on TV,
so I downloaded it from the internet...
But...
the movie was in black and white!!!

What the...
It's not the 1930s...
It's not even a classic film, so why is it black and white?
I was thinking this while watching, convinced that I was a
good downloader who legitimately paid for the movie,
so why...

The black and white scenes
gradually turned into color!!!

Talking about the movie would take too long,
so I'll summarize it with a short quote.

We chose that path. We chose 'Sameness.'
Before my time, before your time, a long time ago.
When we gave up sunshine and differences, color disappeared too.
(...)
By doing so, we could control many things. But at the same time, we had to give up many things.

- From the movie <The Giver>

In short,
the protagonist who had been living in a society (black and white world) where personal emotions and freedom were controlled
begins to see new colors that were previously invisible
as they start feeling new emotions.

Watching the black and white screen transform into color
brought indescribable emotions to me.

The rainbow bridge in <Over the Rainbow>
was inspired right from here :)

If you have time,
I highly recommend watching <The Giver>!
(I hear the original book is good too *whispers*)

The narrator that changes before/after missions

1st person dog perspective / Objective planner perspective

Did you notice, everyone?
The fact that the narrator changes before solving missions and after solving them +_+

Before solving missions, it proceeds from the protagonist 'Haru's' perspective.
Here, from the 'companion dog's' perspective,
I wanted you to feel more immersively
the fear, pain, and warmth they experience for the first time
through the first-person perspective.

And,
even after solving missions,
there was a dilemma about 'whether to continue from Haru's first-person perspective.'

However, I presented situations only objectively,
focusing on 'description' of situations through 'verbs' rather than 'adjectives,'
and 'depiction' rather than 'emotions.'

Since 'adjectives' are personal and subjective emotions,
I worried about 'forcing' my emotions onto players.
Thinking that what's 'moving' to me might come across as 'cringy' to you,
I refined and re-refined the sentences ㅠ_ㅠ

Of course, this was possible thanks to feedback from many team members :)

<Over the Rainbow> designer's behind-the-scenes story

Designer CMYK's earnest request

Finally, talking about design,
since this was the first attempt at an 'emotional theme,'
I wanted to give maximum emotional feeling,
so I troubled the designer quite a lot ^^;;
(Sorry... sorry... but I bought you energy drinks...)

So...!
The designer has something to say to everyone.

Just one thing.

Please don't randomly click on the green four-leaf clover questions!!! Please find them one by one!!!!!!

It was hard to design each one individually OTL -Designer CMYK-

This concludes the behind-the-scenes story of <Over the Rainbow> :)
If you have more questions, please ask in the comments anytime!
(Will... there be any...?)

Um... for the closing remarks...
If there are opportunities in the future, I'd like to try
various projects that have a human touch :)
B2B (Business to Business),
B2C (Business to Customer) are of course important, but
M2M (Man to Man - this term doesn't exist, I made it up),
I'll become a planner who approaches people person to person!
(What's with this student council president tone,,,)

Please look forward to our Realworld projects in the future~!
Thank you^___^
